Maramures is the first Romanian region that I visited in 2001. The encounter with its inhabitants and landscapes permanently marked me and inspired love at first sight. Even if the region is protected against the large cities and highroads over time, its secular patrimony and traditions are unfortunately threatened by a violent “modernity”. Thus, capitalism succeeded to standardize the cultures more efficiently than Ceaușescu’s regime tried to with the systemization politics, which consisted in deleting the distinction between urban and rural. However, we can still feel a particular “spirit” in Maramures, where parties and music can make everything explode. See the video!
